Frequently Asked Questions

Too Expensive / Can’t Afford it

If you're like the average person who smokes you're probably smoking about a pack a day and if the average price per pack is about $20 that works out to be $140 per week or $608 per month. That means that in no time you're going to be ahead. In fact you'll soon be saving all that money each month!

So if you normally spend $608 a month on cigarettes, you’re actually going to SAVE $7296 just in the first year alone!

That’s like getting a $7296 after tax bonus every year and it goes up with inflation - because let's face it, cigarettes are not getting any cheaper. It’s too expensive NOT to quit smoking.

In 5 years that adds up to $36,480!  In 10 years it becomes $72,960 and in 20 years it's a whopping $145,920 without taking into account inflation or interest earned on that money!

You simply cannot afford NOT to quit smoking.

The $350 you'll spend on your session is the best investment you'll ever make because you just can't put a price on your health!

And imagine how you could spend that extra money .... a holiday, a spa bath, home improvements, paying off your mortgage faster, buying a new car, eating out or spoiling yourself or your kids more often - regular massages, new clothes etc.  The list is endless!

Other people charge less

Yes, it's true that some other therapists charge less but think of it this way: - if you needed heart surgery would you go to the cheapest heart surgeon? Or would you opt for the best?

Of course, you'd go for the best surgeon wouldn't you? So why choose anyone but the best when it comes to something as important as quitting smoking?

I do constant ongoing research of other methods, and have found that the three main reasons why other hypnotherapists can charge as little as $100 a session are these:

1) They usually do a program of 3–4 sessions, which means not only do you have to go back over and over again but you end up paying hundreds of dollars anyway. With just one session you're saving yourself a lot of time and hassle.

2) They aren't a specialist.  I am a quit smoking specialist and have helped several thousand people from all walks of life quit smoking in one easy session.

3) They only do hypnosis.  After you leave a session with me you'll feel confident in remaining a non-smoker with ease. Why? Because I'm also a qualified naturopath with many years experience and I'll help you to understand why some of the things you do every day have caused you to fail in the past.  These are the mistakes most people make when quitting smoking that set them up for cravings, mood swings, weight gain and struggle. None of these are a must when you understand what those mistakes are and how to avoid them!

If you look at the entire field, my rate is very reasonable. Some charge over a thousand dollars for smoking cessation and a few are charging as little as $100 (usually unqualified, and inexperienced).

In this profession, as well as in any other profession, you get what you pay for. With me you'll pay only $350 and I guarantee to help you walk out the door with all the tips, tricks and confidence to remain a non-smoker for life.

And just to give you peace of mind, you can come back for an extra session free of charge within 30 days of your session.

So what are you waiting for? Call now to make a reservation and begin your smoke free life.

Is there a Guarantee?

Offering a guarantee, whether money back or lifetime guarantee creates conflict in your mind.

A money back guarantee creates an unconscious conflict between the part of your mind that wants to give up smoking and the part of your mind that wants to have the money back, so sometimes people start smoking again in an attempt to relieve the conflict.

And having those extra free back up sessions that come with a lifetime or 1 year guarantee can set you up to fail. Why?  Because by choosing that option you're giving yourself permission to fail.  With that option it's just too easy when you go to the pub or out socialising to think "It doesn't matter if I start smoking again because I can always go back for a free session".

So if you've decided you're ready to quit smoking and really want to remain a non-smoker for good, it just doesn't make sense to have that option. It's just too tempting.

You also need to ask yourself, how long will the people offering those so-called lifetime guarantees be around?  Will they still be in business in 2 years, 5 years or 10 years time if you need to go back?

Instead, pay for your session and in the unlikely event you did start smoking again you can always come back for a back up session.  It will cost you $210 and that's an extra incentive to help you stay a non-smoker!

My guarantee to you is that I will do everything I can while you're with me to help you walk out confident to remain a non-smoker AND just to give you peace of mind, I'll include back-up session free, if within 30 days of your session you feel you need another session.

Nothing is more important to me than your success, because nearly all of my clients come from word of mouth, and I want to help as many people as possible to stop smoking.

So why not call now to book your reservation and begin your smoke free life!

What if it doesn’t work? “What if it won’t work for me?”

Firstly I want you to understand I can't make you do anything, so if you're not ready to stop smoking or are not doing it because you want to do it for yourself, then I won't book you in.  It's not in my interest to see you because I only want to work with people who are ready to quit.

Secondly, it's not good for my reputation to take your money if I know you're not ready and I have turned a number of people away!

In my experience it's extremely rare for someone to not be a non-smoker after their session. Perhaps there is a deep underlying belief that's stopping them from quitting or there is some hidden benefit from smoking they are subconsciously unwilling to let go of.

I've had a number of clients who have previously seen another hypnotherapist without success. After a few questions the reason is usually apparent.  Most admit that they were not ready to quit at that time or that they did not trust the hypnotherapist they saw.  After their session with me they are pleasantly surprised that they are now non-smokers.

If you have any concerns about whether hypnosis is right for you, please don't hesitate to call me personally on 1300 953 881

Tried hypnosis before and … it didn’t work

When people say they’ve tried hypnosis before or it doesn’t work, there could be a number of reasons.

Perhaps at the time they didn't really want to quit or didn't have enough good reasons to quit.

Maybe someone else pushed them into it.

Perhaps it was because they didn't trust the hypnotist or weren't feeling relaxed enough during the session.

Maybe they needed an extra session.

Perhaps the therapist was inexperienced.

These are some of the possible reasons.

Your session with me includes a back-up session within 30 days of the session, should you need it, for your peace of mind.

If you have tried hypnosis before and it didn't work and are wondering if this method is for you I'm happy to answer any questions or concerns. Please feel free to call me on the number below.

How addictive are cigarettes really?

Cigarettes contain nicotine which affects nicotinic receptors in your brain, altering levels of certain neurotransmitters or brain chemicals.

However, caffeine, chocolate and sugar all affect different brain receptors and therefore also alter levels of various neurotransmitters.

So are cigarettes more addictive than these other substances?  More research is proving that it's extremely unlikely.

Other drugs like alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines and benzodiazapines are far more addictive.

In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Dr Reuven Dar at Tel Aviv University's Department of Psychology found that the intensity of cravings for cigarettes were more to do with the psychosocial element of smoking rather than the physiological effects of nicotine as an addictive chemical.

He stated "These findings might not be popular with advocates of the nicotine addiction theory, because they undermine the physiological role of nicotine and emphasize mind over matter when it comes to smoking."

Interestingly a two year study done in Australia in 2002 and 2003 which analysed data from a thousand GPs around the country demonstrated the highest success rate for their patients who quit smoking was by going cold turkey! (No data on hypnosis was collected!)

Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis:

What if I can't be hypnotised?

Generally speaking, most people are hypnotisable. Therefore, virtually anyone can achieve successful results with hypnosis.

However, hypnosis is not recommended for people with certain mental illnesses so if you experience any mental illness please do discuss it with me before booking your appointment.  In some cases of mental illness you may have hypnosis so long as you have written permission from your healthcare provider.

You will only be hypnostised if you want to be!  Nobody can make you become a non-smoker under hypnosis if you're not ready or if you resist.  For hypnosis to be successful you must be willing to follow instructions and be open to new suggestions and ideas for change.

Most fears around hypnosis are based on myths that have arisen from stage-shows and Hollywood movies.

How will I know if I'm hypnotised?

Most people experience hypnosis as a slightly detached state. Generally you will feel relaxed, possibly lethargic or feel a sort of lightness.

You will still be conscious and awake, but your mind is in a more highly focussed state. It's a very natural state that you've been in before, much like the feeling you have when daydreaming or as you're drifting off to sleep.

Each person's experience of hypnosis is different and varies each time they go into a hypnotic trance.

One thing that people do notice is an inexplicable change in their daily behaviour.

Is hypnosis safe?

Today the use of hypnosis is seen in medicine, childbirth, dentistry, law enforcement, professional sports, and education.

It's been recognised by the British and American Medical Associations since the late nineteen fifties.

Hypnosis is completely safe.

You are aware and in control at every moment and can terminate the session at any time.

Hypnosis is not sleep, nor can you get “stuck” in a state of hypnosis.  People who do not come out of hypnosis straight away are simply enjoying the deep state of relaxation they are in.

While hypnotised you can’t be made to do something against your will!

Nor can you be made to give away any secrets or your PIN.

Hypnosis is a safe, relaxing and an enjoyable experience.

The only people who should not be hypnotised are those with personality disorders, epilepsy, severe depression, panic disorders and other mental health problems unless written permission is given by their doctor.

How does hypnosis work?

In the highly focussed and generally relaxed state known as hypnosis it's much easier to access the creative part of your mind enabling you to be open to new thoughts, beliefs and solutions for creating behavioural change.

This is why it's so quick and easy to change lifelong habits with the power of hypnosis.

How will I know if this system works for me?

Because you will have stopped smoking and will feel great being a non-smoker.

In fact, some people feel as if they have never smoked before!

It's rare to experience withdrawal symptoms after quitting smoking if you follow the simple tips you'll receive during your session.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my session?

All you need to do is fill in a simple form before your session.  If you have internet access you can do it on-line, otherwise we'll arrange for you to get a paper copy.

There's no need to cut down on smoking and it's something I don't normally recommend if it's likely to make you feel more stressed.

I do recommend avoiding caffeine for a few hours before your session though so you're able to fully relax .

Why didn't my doctor tell me about hypnosis?

Actually, there are a few doctors who use hypnosis to help their patients quit smoking or refer them to a hypnotherapist.

But unfortunately nicotine replacement and drugs have become the standard treatments prescribed by doctors today.

These treatments are a wonderful money-spinner for pharmaceutical companies which are making billions of dollars a year from their sales.

Their representatives frequent doctors surgeries peddling their wares so that is what's first on your doctor's mind.

How long does it take?

Your session will take around an hour and three quarters but I suggest you allow yourself 2 hours.

The session is divided into two parts.

First we'll have a chat about your smoking habit, bust a few myths about smoking and hypnosis and talk about how to remain a non-smoker without the mood swings, cravings and weight gain.

The second part of the session is the hypnosis part.

In the unlikely event you need a second session or accidentally do start smoking again a follow-up hypnosis session takes about an hour.

Other Methods:

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patches, gums, inhalers):

Nicotine replacement therapy (gum, patches etc) have been shown by independent scientific studies to produce a success rate of below 10%.

Not only is the success rate with these low but there are many negative side effects, such as: nausea and indigestion, itching and redness of the skin, and nightmares.  Occasionally the side effects can be more serious.

Quit Smoking Drugs:

Numerous health studies (including the National Health Services) have shown that these drugs also have a low success rate unless combined with other psychological intervention—for example counselling or hypnosis.

The two prescribed drugs used are Zyban and Champix.

Commonly reported side-effects of Zyban include headache, dizziness, lack of concentration, anxiety, agitation, depression, dry mouth, constipation, nausea and vomiting. It is also known to cause depression and it can’t be used by people with psychological conditions such as anorexia, bulimia, bipolar disorder or neurological conditions such as epilepsy. It's manufacturers have stated that 1 in 1000 users will suffer convulsions that could lead to death.

Currently Champix  (varenicline) is the favoured drug for smoking cessation but it too has been associated with a high number of side-effects, especially psychiatric side-effects which include suicide.  The following information on Champix (varenicline) was extracted from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices web publication QuarterWatchMay 19, 2011 issue:

“When we first examined varenicline data in 2008, ADE (adverse drug effects) reports for this drug outnumbered reports for all other US prescription drugs, although dispensed prescriptions and reported events later declined. In 2009, FDA required strong warnings about psychiatric side effects for both physicians and patients. Now, with a spike of 1,055 serious ADEs reported in the third quarter of 2010, varenicline again surpassed all other drugs we regularly monitor and also ranked first in reported deaths—more than twice as many as any other drug.

The quarter totals had been boosted by 589 reports about serious and fatal ADEs, including 150 completed suicides, which had occurred in prior years but had been entered into the AERS (adverse events reporting system) for the first time in July 2010. In the QuarterWatch™ tally, we could only identify 37 completed suicide reports initiated by the company and previously submitted to AERS through June 2010. Healthcare providers and consumers directly reported an additional 85 suicide cases, which were entered into AERS without manufacturer involvement. That meant that, as of June 2010, fewer than half the known suicides identifying varenicline as the suspect drug had been reported to the AERS”

The method I use is completely safe!

Hypnosis Group Sessions:

Group hypnosis has been tested with a 10% to 30% success rate. The reason is because only a very basic form of suggestion-only hypnosis can be used in group sessions, and the session cannot be tailor-made for your own individual needs.

Your session with me is personally tailored to your reasons for wanting to quit and I'll help you to understand why you haven't been able to quit before.

FAQs About Me & The Method:

What are your qualifications and how long have you been in business?

In WA there are no minimum training requirements to practice as a hypnotherapist but you can feel confident because I have completed my hypnosis training through Australian Academy of Hypnosis and numerous other hypnosis and neurolinguistic (NLP) trainings.  This has involved many hundreds of hours, including practice and theory.

I'm also a Clinical Member of Professional Hypnotists of WA which has strict minimum training requirements and requires me to do ongoing training and mentoring.

And I've been running a successful health practice for over 8 years so you can rest assured that when you visit me you will receive a high quality of service.

It gives me great satisfaction helping clients make life-changing shifts and I've found hypnosis has been a fantastic way to help people to make these changes.

Many clients who have quit smoking with me come back for help to improve other areas of their lives and refer their friends, which is a great testament to their satisfaction.

What makes you different?

One of the things that make me unique is that I am one of the few hypnosis practices that spends time with you outside of hypnosis to help you understand what causes those cravings, mood swings and weight gain and how to avoid them with some very simple advice.

As a quit smoking specialist I'll help you develop alternative strategies to handle stress and other things in your life that have sabotaged your previous efforts to quit smoking.
